What is Cyanuric Acid (CYA)?
To understand lockout, you first have to understand the relationship between chlorine and Cyanuric Acid (CYA).
Think of CYA as sunscreen for your chlorine. Without it, the intense Arizona sun would burn through your pool’s chlorine in about two hours. By adding stabilizer (CYA), you protect that chlorine, allowing it to stay in the water longer to kill bacteria and algae.
When your CYA levels are balanced: typically between 30 and 50 parts per million (ppm): your chlorine is protected but still free to do its job. However, once those levels climb too high, that "protection" turns into a "prison."

The "Lockout" Phenomenon
As the concentration of CYA increases, it binds more tightly to the chlorine molecules. This creates a "lock" where the chlorine is technically present in the water, but it is chemically unable to react with organic matter.
You might see a high chlorine reading on your test kit, but the "Active Chlorine" (the stuff that actually kills algae) is near zero. This is why your pool can turn green even when your test kit says your chlorine levels are "perfect."
The technical reality: At very high levels of CYA (100+ ppm), the time it takes for chlorine to kill pathogens and algae increases exponentially. It goes from seconds to minutes, and eventually to hours: giving algae a massive head start that the chlorine simply can't overcome.
The Trap: Why Arizona Pools Struggle with Lockout
Most pool owners in Arizona use stabilized chlorine pucks (Trichlor) in their skimmers or chlorinators. These pucks are convenient because they provide a steady drip of chlorine: but they also contain a high percentage of Cyanuric Acid.
Every time you add a puck, you are adding more CYA to your pool.

In other parts of the country, heavy rain or winterizing (draining part of the pool) naturally keeps these levels in check. But in the East Valley, we have two major problems:
- Extreme Evaporation: Our dry heat evaporates the water, but it leaves the chemicals behind. When you top off your pool with a garden hose, you aren't diluting the CYA; you are concentrating it.
- No "Natural" Drain Cycle: Because we keep our pools open year-round, many pools go 3, 5, or even 7 years without a fresh water reset.
By the time we’re called for a green pool restoration, we often find CYA levels at 150, 200, or even "off the charts" (300+ ppm). At that point, no amount of liquid shock will fix the problem.
Signs You’re Dealing with CYA Lockout
How do you know if your pool is suffering from chlorine lock? Look for these "red flag" symptoms:
- The "Never-Ending" Green: You add shock, the pool clears slightly for a few hours, then it’s back to green by morning.
- High Chlorine, Low Clarity: Your test shows 5.0 ppm or higher of chlorine, but the water is cloudy or has algae growing on the walls.
- Chemical Smell: Ironically, a strong "pool smell" often means your chlorine isn't working effectively.
- Unreliable Test Strips: Most DIY test strips are notoriously inaccurate at high CYA levels. They might show "High," but they won't tell you if you're at 100 ppm or a catastrophic 300 ppm.
The Fix: The Partial Drain and Refill
There is a lot of misinformation online about "CYA Reducer" chemicals. In our 15 years of experience serving Arizona, we’ve found that these products are often expensive, slow, and unreliable.
The only guaranteed way to lower CYA is through dilution.

Since CYA does not evaporate, you must remove the high-CYA water and replace it with fresh water.
How much do you need to drain?
It’s a simple math equation:
- If your CYA is 100 ppm and you want to get to 50 ppm, you need to drain 50% of your pool.
- If your CYA is 200 ppm and you want to get to 50 ppm, you need to drain 75% of your pool.
